Victorian fashion in america
In comparison to today, women of of the 1800's dressed with a little more class. For most of us today it doesn't take more than 30 minutes to get ready for a regular day. But women back then tended to take a little more time getting ready what with the stockings, chemises, petticoats, corsets, dresses, collars, cuffs, gloves, etc. The list goes on and on. Probably one of the most interesting things that they did with their clothing was that they wore up to seven fully starched petticoats. The reason they did this was because back
then it was considered highly fashionable to have dresses in a bell shape. To accomplish this, women would wear starched petticoats under their skirts to give them that bell shape.
The invention that changed women's fashion was the caged crinoline, or better known as the hoop skirt. The hoop skirt consisted of a series of concentric hoops. It became very popular because not only did it lighten the weight women had to carry, but it also relieved women of much heat. Because the hoop skirt already had the bell-shape, women no longer had to wear more than two petticoats.
After the invention of the caged crinoline, the crinolette was invented. The crinolette was invented in the late 1860's. The purpose of the crinolette was to bring the fullness of the skirt to the back of the dress. To get the fullness of the skirt to move up toward the hips, the use of the rump, or bustle, was needed.
